The Choker’s eyes slowly scan me from head to toe, his creepy gaze lingering on the curves under my t-shirt and sweats. Rage shoots up my spine. What a scumbag. If he stopped thinking with his pants for two seconds, he’d notice my demon tail instead of my boobs and butt. Some quasis get stuck with pig- or bunny-bottoms, but I hit the jackpot: the long and thin variety with an arrowhead end. Even better, it’s coated in dragon scales, so the thing’s nearly impossible to block or cut.

But the Choker isn’t being smart. He stares into my big watery brown eyes and long lashes; I shamelessly blink in fake-terror. For trial by combat to be valid, the soul must have a chance at winning. They get three options, two of which are relatively easy to defeat. Then, there’s me, the one nobody should pick. Except they always do.

“I choose her.” His thick mouth stretches into a vicious smile. “I’ll fight Myla.” In a low voice, he adds: “You’ll find out why they call me the Choker.”

I jam my hands in my pockets and fake-shiver. And you’ll find out why they called me to fight you, dickhead.

Sharkie thumps his staff on the ground again, and the ghostly Choker turns into two-hundred fifty pounds of real human. “So be it.”

“Here are the rules,” announces Sharkie. “Upon the count of three, you shall battle onto the death. If the Choker loses, he goes to Hell.” The angels look at me with encouraging glances. “If the Choker wins, he goes to Heaven.” The demons let out a deafening roar.

I watch the demons cheer, my hands balling into fists. Those freakies would love for a purely evil soul to enter Heaven. If a spirit has even a smidgeon of good in it, they ‘go angel’ once they cross the pearly gates. A purely evil soul could cause no end of trouble for the angels, and demons love trouble.

The crowd quiets into a nervous hush. Sharkie waves his hand; Sheila, Walker, and XP-22 make a hasty exit into an obliging archway. I hop from foot to foot and crack my neck. This will be a hoot.

Sharkie raises his arms. “The battle begins in 3, 2, 1!”

I lift my chin. “All my life, I wondered what it meant that I’m an elf,” I begin. “Now I know. When it comes to my people, there’s only one fairy tale life template... and that’s to hurt other people before they do the same to you. I want no part of it.”

Jacoby’s elegant features turn unreadable. He’s never looked more handsome and remote. “So what do you desire?”

“I’m going back to New York. My old home is still there. No one’s touched my room at Cynder Mercantile. I can return to the city and rebuild my life.”

Jacoby shakes his head. “But you still don’t know your true role in the Moonbeam court. You could be a royal. By returning to New York, who knows what you’re risking?”

I shake my head. “I’m retaking my life.”

Jacoby moves even closer. His eyes brim with an emotion I don’t want to name. “You must sense what’s between us.” The look turns so intense, it makes me shiver.

“I don’t want to be with an elven prince, Jacoby. Let me go.”

Long seconds tick by before Jacoby replies.

“As you command.”

I exhale. Yes. I’m about to return to New York and restart my human-style life. It doesn’t matter that Jacoby is smart, kind and strong. And I definitely don’t notice his handsome face and strong body. Sure, we did share a secret or two. Yet that kind of intimacy doesn’t mean anything.

I’m moving on with my life.

Jacoby means nothing.

And perhaps if I say that enough, I’ll start to believe it.

“Hello, girlie.” Wyatt took a half-step closer, his gaze locked onto my breasts. I had the sudden urge to vomit.

I hefted my mallet again, hoping he’d take the hint not to come any nearer. “Elea. My name’s Elea.”

“Didn’t I say that?”

“Nope.” I adjusted my grip to show my glowing bones. “Why are you here?”

“Some monk had a letter for you. Thought I’d help out.” He slipped an envelope from his pocket. I recognized the seal right away—it was from Tristan’s old Monastery, the one where he’d trained as Necromancer. He’d given that all up to become a merchant. Why would they write me of all people?

“Thank you.” I reached for the letter, but Wyatt pulled it away. “Not so quickly. I want to talk.”

Now, we get to it.

“So talk.” My bones glowed more brightly as my swing took on extra power.

Thud.

Wyatt jumped when the hammer hit. I grinned.

“You’ve grown into a lovely young woman, Elea. Eighteen years old, only ten years younger than me.” Wyatt clutched his hand to his chest the way that characters did in badly drawn illustrations of courtly love. “You’re tall and fit with hair black as a raven’s wing, smooth olive skin, and whiskey-colored eyes. A man could spend a lifetime looking at your sweet face.”

I stared at him, slack jawed. Whiskey-colored? Did he really say that?

Wyatt’s blue eyes narrowed slightly and he pursed his lips as if ready for my kiss.

Oh, no.

“Come now, Wyatt. Ever since the courts ruled in my favor, I’ve had suitors darkening my door day and night.”

Wyatt shook his head in surprise. He was really playing this up. “That’s not true. You’re a lovely maiden. The finding of the court is merely a coincidence. I’ve been hoping to be sweethearts for ages.”

“Sweethearts. Truly.” I smacked my lips. “For ages.”

“Of course.”

I gripped my mallet tighter and imagined it was his neck.
