Pretend your protagonist is at school and opens his/her locker – what will we see inside?
School books and maybe a picture of his girlfriend Kate and her brother Mod.

What books were your favorite as a youth and why?

I liked the Hardy Boys books, Goosebumps, Roald Dahl books like Charlie and the Chocolate factory, and of course Harry Potter. All of these books had a sense of wonder to them and were easy to immerse myself in.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Why?

In many ways, I feel like I still haven’t grown up. I’m 26 and still want to be a full fledged full time author. I also want to dedicate myself to martial arts mastery and video game design. I suppose I want to be a modern day renaissance man. See, I still haven’t grown up yet.

What would you write in a letter to your teen self?

I would tell him to focus more and to seek a path of mastery in what he really desired. I feel too much of my teen years were lacking in focus.

What superpower would you love to have? Why?

For me, I’d have to say teleportation. It would save me so much time and I could use that time to read more and write more.

Hunger Games or Twilight? Why?

Hunger Games. Of course, because it has a stronger female lead and a cooler premise to me.

Favorite TV show from your childhood?

I would have to say it’s a three way tie between Batman the animated series, Dragon Ball Z, and Digimon season 1. I had a great childhood.

Favorite hot beverage. Why?

Hot tea. Because it’s easy to make and calms me. The perfect writing beverage.

What four literary characters would you most like to have over for dinner?

I’m thinking Tyrion Lannister, Albus Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Liandra from my own book would have some interesting conversations. They’d also enjoy each other’s company, the curious minds that they are. I wouldn’t say too much as I sipped on a butterbeer and listened to their banter.

You’re stranded on a desert island—which character from your book do you want with you? Why?

I would want to share the island with Liandra. First off because the best way to spend your time on an island is with a beautiful member of whatever sex you’re attracted to and secondly, she has magical abilities which would make our stay there an enjoyable experience. It would be more like a resort than a castaway situation.

You’ve just won a million dollars and you’re not allowed to save any of it. What do you spend it on?

Would I have to blow it all at once? If not then I’d just live off of it and write books until it ran out. You need to experience some great adventures to write great books so I’d spend a lot of it on travel too. If I had to blow it on one thing then I’d buy a house for my mother and make sure all her bills were paid for a long time.

Favorite class in high school. Why?

My favorite class in high school had to be my creative writing class. I had an awesome teacher in Ms. Jean and she gave me assignments that ignited my love of writing. Without her class, I might not have chosen the path I have.

She needed to figure out who has gunning for him...or better yet, she had to convince the man who hired this assassin to call off his killer. That man was definitely Robert Grabas.

About the Author:Belart Wright was born and raised in Detroit Michigan with a short but adventurous stint in St. Ignace during his childhood. Always poor, Belart had to learn to use his imagination to fuel the fun he had. Whether it was drawing cool and dangerous looking heroes to creating fully fledged storylines with his action figures to writing stories about kids similar to himself with fantastic abilities and destinies, Belart was always an expert in delving into other worlds that were not his own.

Always naturally talented at writing, it took the advice of his brother, and a little creative boost from his high school creative writing teacher to get him to realize that writing was something he could do really well and pursue as a career. To this day he revels in building worlds and characters from the ground up such as the worlds of Hell Warriors, Story of K, Cyborgs and Deadmen, and Pannam which are all working titles.

In his spare time Belart tries to update his two blogs whenever he can, but mostly just ends up writing or editing. As a huge gamer he plays a lot of games online and off with his favorites at the time being Borderlands 2, Phantasy Star Online, X-Men Legends, and Dark Souls. He just wishes he had more time to whittle his impossibly long gaming list down which goes all the way back to PS1 and Sega Genesis classics. He and his buddies at FlubberKnuckle Studios are also working on several new game IPs. He is also patiently waiting for the next installment of the superb Legacy of Kain series.

The Lost Town follows his adventures while uncovering the lost history of the magical place where his father was born and raised. An imagined Trochenbrod was the setting for Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, Everything is Illuminated, and the movie by the same name.

As I was growing up, my father did not often mention the town Trochenbrod (pronounced Trawkhenbrawd) in Eastern Poland where he was born and raised. But when he did, his longing and affection for it were unmistakable. After my father passed away, I realized I knew nothing about his beloved hometown. He had never volunteered information about it, and I had never asked. Although none of my relatives knew where Trochenbrod had been located, other than “in Poland someplace,” they were certain nothing was there anymore. I was told that after the Nazis murdered all Trochenbrod’s Jews, they destroyed all its buildings, and the memory of it was lost.

How could that be? I wondered. How could all traces of a town and its people vanish? If the town was destroyed in the Holocaust, wouldn’t something—derelict buildings, house foundations, low stone walls—still be found there? And what happened to Christian neighbors of the Jews who lived in Trochenbrod? They weren’t destroyed by the Nazis; maybe their descendants were still there and could tell me something about Trochenbrod in the days when Jews also lived there. I had to find out. I had to see for myself.

About the Author:

Avrom Bendavid-Val was working as an environmental consultant in Poland in 1997 when he decided to cross the Ukrainian border and visit the place his father came from, the town of Trochenbrod. Finding nothing there, he was determined to uncover the history and spirit of the vanished town. Avrom continues to this day to research, write and make films about the town, and serve as the anchor for the American community of Trochenbrod descendants. Avrom Bendavid-Val lives in Washington, D.C.

“Next birthday, I want an AK-47.” He nudged her. “Look.”

She fixed her blurry gaze on what appeared to be a black wolf emerging from the trees. The creature was larger than she’d thought wolves were, and she’d understood none remained in these mountains. They were all farther north or west. Somewhere else.

Apparently, she was misinformed.

Judging by its size, she guessed this was a male. He stopped before their hideout. Eyes the color of red coals surveyed them before he turned and darted down the trail she’d spotted.

“Holy cow, Batboy. Did you see that?” she whispered.

Jimmy didn’t reply. He prodded her again.

She stared at the big brown and gray wolf that took the black one’s place. Where on earth had he come from?

The beast turned its furry head at her and Jimmy. His eyes shone with a luminous light, like fireflies...

Why do you write juvenile fiction? What draws you to it?

I’ve always like Young Adult fiction, because it has always spoken to me since I’m still young myself. I also wanted to create a new sub-genre within the YA mold because it seems that there are books for 10-14, and then 16 year olds, then nothing for us 20-somethings that isn’t Harlequin Romance. I am drawn to the more relatable characters and issues that they face as opposed to older geared novels.

What books were your favorite as a youth and why?

Harry Potter series, hands down! It was my first series to read, and that’s when I discovered that one book stories just weren’t my thing. I loved growing with the characters. I also enjoyed the Series of Unfortunate Events, Crank series, and most recently the Divergent Series. I grew with Harry and his friends, then got to be a part of a family with the Beaudelaires and then got to see the end of the world with Divergent.

What superpower would you love to have? Why?

I want the ability to read minds! Gosh I wish I knew what people around me were thinking, just for morbid curiosity! I never know what people are thinking in that I cannot read faces to save my life. If you tell me you like something, I’ll just believe it and not question it at all. It would be so much easier.

Favorite TV show from your childhood?

I really loved this odd show called The Big Comfy Couch and Out of the Box when I was young. Then of course Spongebob became my favourite before too long, along with Danny Phantom (which was cancelled way before it’s prime!). I like Degrassi: The Next Generation, too, in my teens because it was so relatable. Friends, Third Rock From the Sun and Will & Grace are STILL my favourites!

Which of your characters would you most like to meet IRL? Why?

Chelsea, hands down. She’s the woman I have always wanted to be: strong in the face of danger, and she has the ability to believe in herself when no one else does. I still have doubts to this day about even the littlest of things that shouldn’t bother me. Chelsea doesn’t have that at all; she knows who she is and she gets what she wants.

Favorite pizza toppings.

Just cheese and pepperoni for me. I’m very basic in the foods that I like. I can’t stand twenty toppings on my pizza! It ruins the flavor in my opinion.

You’ve just won a million dollars and you’re not allowed to save any of it. What do you spend it on?

My dream house, with a huge two story library complete with those ladders that slide down the rows of books. I would buy and pay off the ultimate house, and then if there was any leftover, I would purchase my dream car and maybe something for my husband!

Favorite class in high school. Why?

AP English, which I was able to take all four years. I loved every minute of it. We were treated like adults, got to read at our own paces, and got access to books the normal kids didn’t. I learned to love (and loathe some of) the classics, and understand nuances in the old ways of writing. I would take it over and over again if I could.

Chelsea and Chad are twin fire and water elementals, humans born with the ability to control the elements. Chelsea struggles to control her flames, while Chad finds himself under the control of dangerous people. War draws near, and brother and sister must choose a side, even if it’s against each other.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Chad’s anger was growing as we drove on, forcing the temperature in the car to drop lower and lower. I knew if I tried to heat it up, he’d just get angry, so I forced myself to ignore it as best as I could. If I closed my eyes, I could see all of the events unfold in front of me again. I could see the fire raging through the upstairs hallway, burning every ounce of memories away. I could hear my father’s voice telling us to hurry out of the house, so calm and steady. I could see my father placing his hand to the random outlets in the house as we ran out, setting them ablaze without a thought. I could smell the smoke as it rose throughout the house, making it hard to see as Chad and I ran down the stairs and out the door.

I’d gotten out of the house a full two minutes before Chad had. I thought that he’d fallen and I had left him behind. But he had burst through the front door, flames on his heels and plastic bag in his hand. It was a small sandwich sized bag with a big wad of money resting inside of it. Then we’d heard the sirens, and Chad somehow knew what to do. I did what he said and ran to his truck, jumped in and waited.

We finally pulled off the highway and I realized where we were going: Steve’s house. My heart skipped a beat and I finally relaxed. We were going to our backup home, to safety. I looked at the cookie-cutter houses, towering in their red-bricked glory. Then Steve’s house came into view. This was the home that Chad and I would flock to when our dad would work late. Steve wasn’t like us, but he was a good friend of Chad’s who didn’t judge us for our secrets. His parents liked us enough that we had spent the night over there quite a bit when we were younger. And within the last few months, Steve and I had secretly grown closer. But now, Chad and I were on the run. I had ruined everything.

About the Author:

Born in Louisiana, Belle Manuel spent her early years learning to be a good Cajun girl before moving to Texas. She visits Louisiana often, enjoying the quiet break from the active Texas life. When not writing, Belle enjoys crochet and crossword puzzles. Her debut novel, Fire, was released July 1st of this year.

Belle first began writing in middle school, where her first writing job was getting paid by other students to write stories for them. She enjoyed turning their random requests into interesting stories, and the money she made helped fund her reading habit.

Fire began with an idea, but quickly took on a life of its own and changed as Belle wrote it. With all the adjustments and improvements, it eventually evolved into The Elemental Series.

Chapter 10. Returning Home

So they found life.

Ironic that the North Korean was the first to do so, eh?

This isn’t a time for levity.

I know. But given that life was found so easily and so quickly on that planet, it tells us that surely we’ll find more advanced lifeforms, and soon.

The bigger question is, why was the life we found there so primitive?

Following Soo-Kyung’s discovery, the mission changed. The scientific pods were to stay, along with an attachment of Phaetons, but the Explorer was to return home and restock. Stellar Cartography was working around-the-clock to find routes to other stars, given that life being found here meant that, of course, the Galaxy must be teeming with life, and most of it must be more complex than the basic lichens they found.

Aisha was still confused about one thing. Once they had broken orbit, and were cruising back to the Explorer, she had to ask. “Why did you ask me to stop?”

Soo-Kyung signaled for them to close external comms. She clearly wanted to keep the conversation private amongst the three of them.

“Once I knew that it was life,” said Soo-Kyung. “I realized that we hadn’t sterilized ourselves. Every further step we took could potentially contaminate, and perhaps kill, these primitive lifeforms. We’re carrying bacteria, spores, and who-knows-what-else with us that would be terribly invasive to the native species.”

“So why did they let us walk on the surface?”

“I guess they just assumed that there was no life there. That it was a dead planet.”

Something about it just bugged Aisha. “They didn’t ask us to stop,” she said. “They allowed us to walk on the surface. You’d think they’d know better. It was you who was smart enough to realize that we might impact any life there.”

“Maybe they were too busy?”

“Or maybe they didn’t care,” Aisha said, realizing how ominous it sounded.

“Guys,” said David. “We just discovered life. Don’t you realize the implications? At least immediately?”

“What?”

“You think they’re going to just release this broadly on Earth? Look at all the wars that have been fought over religion. Between the Caliphate and my country for one. They can’t let this information loose on Earth. We’re not yet ready.”

“But we rushed into discovery.”

“Now I know why they kept Explorer a secret, building her on the far side of the moon.”

“But we’ve been asked to do things differently,” said Soo-Kyung, for once having some emotion in her voice. “And one of the things I want to do differently is share information like this equally amongst all people. And yes, I understand the irony that it’s me saying it, but wars like those in my country happened because of a few people keeping key information from the masses. I can’t let that happen again.”

“I don’t think we can stop them,” said David.

“What’ll they do?”

“Boot us out of the Academy and send us Earth-side, of course. Anything we have to say can be easily discredited.”

Aisha sighed. David was right and she knew it. She just hoped that Soo-Kyung did too.

“So,” she said. “We toe the party line. We keep this all a big secret. We play along until the time is right, where we can take control, and do what’s right for the world.”

Soo-Kyung was exasperated. “Isn’t that what they think they’re doing? Doesn’t that just make us the same as them?”

Seamus interrupted with an external comm. “Folks, Captain has ordered you back double-time.”

“Why?”

“We’re going home.”

Tuesday at lunch, Mercedes cornered me at my locker. “I heard about Elle and Rhino,” she said. “Can you do that for me?”

“Do what for you?”

“Set me up with someone. I was supposed to go with Lukas, but Elle won’t let that happen. So, I was thinking ... maybe you could help me date on the dork side?”

“On the what?”

“You know, get me hooked up with one of those nice guys you know. All the boys in my classes are either jocks or jerks. And they’re all on the list.” She rolled her eyes. “So, will you?”

I wasn’t sure what to say. On one hand, Mercedes Washington was the real deal, a true Hottie of Troy. She didn’t need my help to get a boy. But on the other hand … the girl standing next to me bounced on the balls of her feet like she could barely contain her enthusiasm. And, underneath all that energy, she was really very sweet. I couldn’t tell if she didn’t see the difference between us or if she just pretended it didn’t exist. Someone like Mercedes deserved a boy who would treat her with the respect she deserved.

“Do you like Star Wars?” I asked.

Darcy Vance is the slacker half of the author duo of Charity Tahmaseb and Darcy Vance. She didn’t start writing seriously until she was 40, and didn’t publish her first novel until she was 50. Even then, she needed a co-author to get the job done.
